Contra viento y marea – Against all odds

I love the sea and all things nautical and since I enjoy studying French, I’m delighted to find idiomatic expressions that are similar in Spanish such as “Contre vents et marées”, (literally: Against wind and tide) which translates into English as, “Against all odds, at all costs, come hell or high water, come what may, through hell and high water, through thick and thin”.

Spanish French English
Contra viento y marea Contre vents et marées Against all odds

The following excerpt is translated from a French song.

Against all odds, dare to take off
Dare to turn the page, life is to invent
Against all odds, face the thunderstorms
Life is a journey where the risk is to love

Original French version
Contre vents et marées, oser prendre le large
Oser tourner la page, vivre est à inventer
Contre vents et marées, se frotter aux orages
La vie comme un voyage où risquer c’est aimer
