Our Approach

Hi, I’m Kathleen.

The Word Corner is a platform I established to celebrate the power of writing - its ability to generate creative wellbeing and facilitate connection and community.

The Word Corner provides a number of ways to engage with writing, whether as a writer, reader, or as someone supporting another person in their writing endeavours.

On this page you can read about how we work and why writing can facilitate creative wellbeing, connection and community.

If you are interested in finding out about The Word Corner’s services please see here.

How we work

Whilst every project or client is unique with a specific context and situation, we generally follow this over-arching process informed by the following:

Focused Outcomes

We establish clear deliverables and outcomes so that everyone is working towards a shared, clarified goal.

Collaborative

Everyone has knowledge, skills and experience to bring to a project or collaboration – we respect what everyone brings.

Expertise and creativity

We bring our knowledge and experience to a problem to look for creative solutions.

Establish the goal

This is an initial stage of discussions (including brainstorming if applicable) to ensure there is clarity on what you want to solve or what goal/vision you would like to achieve.

Progress

At all times of the engagement, communication is open and there are regular check-ins, particularly against milestones, timelines and budget. This is critical so any amendments or changes can be developed.

Set clear outcomes

Based on the initial discussions, together we set clear outcomes or a suite of deliverables. If the engagement is longer term or set up as a project, a project plan is developed including indicated timelines, milestones and budget.

Completion

The final stage is to ascertain that deliverables/outcomes have met design. Depending on the type of engagement or project, the appropriate concluding steps are initiated.

Why writing?

Creative Flow

The creative state engages a different part of the brain to rumination and worry. Creating this condition helps to trigger other changes including being in a more balanced (or ventral) state. It also helps to anchor into the present moment, which also reduces worry behaviours.

Somatic Experience

The physical act of writing, with paper and pen, can produce a somatic experience that is slow, deliberate and focused. These sensations can signal safety to the body which in turn helps the body to return to a more balanced (or ventral) state. In this state, other healing possibilities arise.

Connection

Writing, as with other creative activities, provides an opportunity to connect on many different levels - with the self, with history and heritage, with the imagined and unreal, with the past or the future, with stories, with the reader, with community. Connection provides a sense of safety, and helps with the need to be seen, heard and valued.
